Ian VS. Garbage Disposal

A few weeks ago, our garbage disposal stopped working. Ian flipped the switch, and it clunked around, made some awful noises, and just then just stopped.

So he asked me "did you put anything in there that your not supposed to?!"

Feeling a little offended i replied, NO. It was a fair question for him to ask, i guess, considering i do a nice percentage of the cooking. But i still was slightly offended. I know not to put anything large down there, no onions, no chicken bones...So the broken disposal remained a mystery.

It was something we just lived with, we've been without a garbage disposal for the last three years, between our apartment & rental house, so no.big.deal. Until you do dishes.

We found, when ever we did a load of dishes there was a sink monster that gurrgled, and gurrled, until it EXPLODED with last weeks food that is supposed to be sitting nicely in the bottom what-ever-is-down-there into our sink. EW. What an eye sore, sure to cause some not-so-pleasant smells, and it was a pain becasue you knew if you rinsed it down the sink, as soon as you did another load of dishes, MR. Monster down there would surely explode again.

This little problem suddenly became something we needed to fix. asap. So Ian hopped on the computer, did a little research, found a new disposal, at the good o'll Home Depot , and two trips later, and lots of tools & grunting, and a few choice words, wa-la a new garbage disposal.

Here he is. Dosen't he look like a real home-owner?

Oh, and what broke the dang thing in the first place? Not a mystery after-all.

Ian asks me last week "do you think an avacado peel can go in a garbage disposal?" I say, "the actual avacado (like the mushy stuff) or the PEEL?" Trying to give him the benifit of the doubt, thinking to myself, we don't have a garbage compactor down there, just a little disposal.

He says "the peel"

Ah, NO Ian, i don't think an avacado PEEL should go down the garbage disposal. "oh, well i think thats what broke the garbage disposal" YA-THINK?!?

After a nice little lesson about what is approiate, and not approiate to go down our humble garbage disposal, two trips to Home Deopt in one day, and an afternoon of my husband under the sink, I think the Avacado Peels will go in the garbage CAN from here on out, what do you think??

Ahhh...the joys of home-owning. I believe we have years & years of adventures like this ahead of us.... =)

1. Be happy you have a man who can fix things.
2. Every Project should include buying a new tool or tools!
3. Be happy you have a disposal, the garbage smells so much worse without one.

Peace and Grace from MN
